A Nation of Laws by Jeff Jackson 02/20/03
The Land of the Free - A Conservative Politics Web Site

We are a nation of laws.  True there are some that prefer that not to be true.  They would prefer that whatever group has the biggest stick and the power to use that stick control the nation.

But we ARE a nation of laws.  And in order for there to be laws, we as a nation, must have a defined sense of what is right and what is wrong.  Without a notion of right and wrong there can be no notion of legal and illegal.  For what is legal and what is illegal can not be defined without first defining right from wrong.

But where does this notion of right and wrong come from?

Many would like you to think that these laws are the arbitrary whim of the people and that we have set forth our own sets of morality.  However that is not true.  For should we allow the arbitrary whim of the people to determine our laws then there is no over riding moral basis for the laws.  And without an over riding (read this as supreme) moral basis, the arbitrary whims of the people can be done away with in a blink of an eye with a new arbitrary whim.  Thus they can not stand the test of time.

The truth is that we, as a nation, devise our laws from a superior moral authority.  A higher moral authority than you or I.  As such, our rights upon which our laws are based are unalienable, and as such our protection under the laws are unalienable as well.  And only considering the source and the history of that moral authority, can we as a people create laws that withstand arbitrary whims.

More over this nation was founded under a particular supreme moral authority.  God.  And as such the moral base of our society and our laws that act as the pillars must be, and are, derived from this moral authority.

Simple concepts.  Difficult to grasp.

For you see, without our founders’ underlying faith in a supreme being (specifically the Judeo-Christian God), our laws are nothing.  Without a foundation in the belief of a supreme being, who's general tenants have been preached for thousands of years, who are you or I to say that something is wrong?

Even though we, as a melting pot society, may hold different truths and beliefs in separate supreme beings we must recognize that God is indeed the foundation of our society.

You do not need to believe in a God.  You do not even need to believe in the Judeo-Christian God.  But what you need to understand is that God is indeed the foundation of what our society is and where it derives its moral authority from.

Without the power of the moral authority of God to back up laws that prevent actions such as murder, what power do any of us have to enforce it as a crime?  Because we say so?  That is hardly going to hinder anyone, especially if they have the gun and you don't.

What I find so amazing is that so few understand the relevance of God in our society.  It never ceases to amaze me that people lobby so hard to believe in chaos and disregard the laws or desire to tear down those that are at the heart of morally unarguable points.  I say unarguable because they are tenants of the religious foundation of this country.  Any point can technically be argued but the point is to what extent is the argument valid instead of idle banter.

Not to say that we, as a nation have never passed immoral legislation.  We have. But I always wonder how those that lobby so hard for anarchy and chaos would feel they day they get their wish and someone holds a gun to their head to take what little they have left, and no one else lifts a finger to help.  Of course many of them would profess to not care; that it would be the general order of things.  But deep down, would you hold your faith in that?  Would you hold your life in the hands of those that believe there is no moral order other than that of he who has the biggest stick rules?

The first step down the road to anarchy is the removal of our moral basis for existence in a society.  This means the removal of God.

But we must tread a thin line here.  That thin line is basing our laws on God's moral authority while not in essence forcing those who are of different or non faiths to believe in God.

And this is the argument that some of the more clever (or so they think) will try to make.  By basing our laws on a supreme moral authority, and then forcing all in this country to abide by them are we not in essence forcing them to believe in God and the moral authority that he represents?

No.

Quite simply because the moral authority derived from God does not discriminate against any man, but rather applies equally to all.  Despite its uses in the past to start wars and persecute so called “non-believers” you will find nothing in any writing to suggest that this is the intention of the faith.  Also too because no man is held within the borders of this nation against their will except for criminals.  If one does not like the laws and moral constructs of the United States then one may simply leave.  Therefore, by default basing laws upon the moral authority of God does not infringe upon that moral authority.  The second you are free to go else where without hindrance it ceases to be so.

Since the words of God, and the moral authority derived there from, applies equally to all men without discrimination then there can be no coercion of those of other or non faiths.  The laws do not inhibit them from practicing what faith they choose to practice, and therefore it is possible to be of a different system of beliefs while under the moral authority of God.  And should it be that they simply can not live within the confines of those laws then they are forever free to go to whatever lands they so wish.

Almost so simple that it can be to complicated to grasp.
