We the People of the United States

By: Carolyn Hileman

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The United States Bill of Rights consists of the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. These amendments limit the powers of the federal government, protecting the rights of all citizens, residents and visitors on United States territory. Among the enumerated rights these amendments guarantee are: the freedoms of speech, press, and religion; the people’s right to keep and bear arms; the freedom of assembly; the freedom to petition; and the rights to be free of unreasonable search and seizure; cruel and unusual punishment; and compelled self-incrimination.

The preamble to our beloved Constitution mentions not once but twice that it is for the Citizens of the United States. Now I am not some big time college graduate, I am not a senator or congresswoman and I am certainly not the President, but bless the good Lord I can read. Unfortunately that is not a requirement for members of the ACLU and other organizations who claim that every human has those rights, especially on our soil. All the while the illegal immigrants were marching; people were calling the police, their leaders, ICE and other organizations that are supposed to protect us from invasion and criminal activity and they were told countless times by those less educated than you and I that they were just exercising their first amendment rights. Read that preamble again with me, We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Now they do have certain Inalienable rights, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and it would appear since they were allowed to march in our streets and demand forgiveness for their trespasses, that their right to the pursuit of happiness trumps our rights to a secure home front. These people do not need to go out into our streets to obtain what our government has already given them without the consent of the people. When our leaders tell us that they are just exercising their first amendment rights, they are in fact saying that they are already American citizens, because if they are not they would have no first amendment rights. So why the big show in Washington to give them what they have already given them, why are our tax dollars being spent on their little investigations, their little debates when they have already given them the rights of the citizens there is no need for the arguments, the marches or anything else? None of us has a paper that says we get our rights unless you count that constitution that no one is bothering to read.

We the people, why do you suppose they wrote that? Could it be that the country is supposed to be ruled by the people? Because it is being ruled only by a handful of people who have decided they do not have to listen to the voice of the people because they are in charge. They do not have to listen to the countless calls to their offices demanding that they do not pass any bill even slightly resembling amnesty. Because in their minds that bill has already passed, they have already given them the rights they are just wanting it on paper and besides they are the ones in charge why on earth should they listen to the people. The countless emails, the countless phone calls, the countless visits have fallen on deaf ears and this is no longer a government by the people, for the people it is a government by Washington, for Washington and what ever they say is the law it does not matter what we the people want they are in charge, we voted for them so we must have wanted them to do what they wanted. And so it stands today, in order for the American people to be heard in the great halls of Congress or in the Oval office we must gather in the streets, we must threaten to boycott our own government, we must call it a civil rights movement and we must not be American.

We can not lay this all at the foot of the White House because the members of all legislative bodies, have forgone the Constitution and the Bill of rights. In their pursuit of happiness those two pieces of paper just got in the way and heeding the word of the people became a cliché. They no longer bother to ask themselves what their people would want them to do because they have the power and what on earth could a bunch of wimpy American’s do to them. They know by past experience that the American people will allow them to do as they wish without so much as a whimper and they relish in the fact that we enjoy the luxury of not having to care. They know the average American has not looked at the constitution since they left school, they know that they can claim our founding fathers meant anything and most people will not bother to look it up. They know they have full reign, they can say and do anything and the people will just go on their merry way and ignore it, they can hand out rights to those that they don’t belong to and take away rights form those that they do and they will never hear a word from We the people of the United States of America.
