If you are going to speak for me
By: Carolyn Hileman
If you are going to speak for me then get some fire in your belly, I want to know that you know how angry I am. I want to know that you feel the heat from my anger and resentment. I have been watching you guys up in Washington and let me tell you, you look weak and you look pitiful like some one has spanked you and you are having to say this stuff. Well by all means if you don’t believe what you are saying don’t say it. When you walk up to that podium you are taking with you the voice of the American people and our voices are not weak; they are not shameful. They are angry about being put in this position in the first place.
If you are going to speak for me, then you need to know that you are speaking for the man who is far away from fighting a battle he never chose, for people who would stand and call him a murderer to his face and who is afraid of what he will come home to if he gets to come home at all. If you are going to speak for me then you need to know that you are speaking for the mother who is raising her children alone because she has no one and nothing to fall back on; the mother who works two jobs and rarely gets to see the kids she is working hard to provide for. If you are going to speak for me then you need to know you are speaking for the teenager who can’t find a job mowing lawns this summer because someone decided that they must be eighteen to mow lawns for profit and if they did they would be breaking the law and yet the illegal immigrant can do it and be rewarded for being illegal.
If you speak for me you need to know about the young woman who has worked her butt off in school, who has had straight A’s who can’t afford to go to college because her parents even though they work cannot afford $25000.00 a year to send her to college; whose parents make too much for her to get that Pell Grant that is available to those who don’t work. You need to know about the parents of that child who want for all the world to see their daughters dreams to come true and would do anything to make that happen but simply cannot afford to do it. You need to know how angry it makes the parents who have pushed their kids to do well in school and stayed up nights helping them with their homework to find out that although their child does not qualify for help they qualify to pay the taxes to make sure someone who entered our country illegally does.
If you are going to speak for me, you might want to consider speaking to me and asking me what it is I want my tax dollars to fund. If you are going to speak for me then you might want to know that I in no way wish to pay taxes for people who have come to this country illegally and I don’t really care how many children they have. I want them sent home. If you are going to speak for me then you need to know that I am not responsible for breaking up their families. They are. I did not ask them to come here. I did not ask them to waste my tax dollars on the doctor bills for their pregnancy, or the hospital stay so they could have the child and I damn sure do not want the responsibility of paying to raise their children and sending them to college.
There are a lot of things you need to know, there are a lot of things you will never understand about me and what I want. But do not hang your head in shame when you are at that podium; I have nothing to be ashamed of. You may, but I do not. I am not the one who created this problem by not doing anything and not enforcing the laws already on the books. I am not the one standing up there for all the world to see arguing about whether making illegal immigrants go home and come back legally will cause hardships for criminals. You may hang you head in shame when you are discussing that because you know the American people do NOT want this, but you had better not hang your head if you are going to speak for me.
