Don’t Do It

By: Carolyn Hileman

I know you would really like to do something that would make a lasting impression on our leaders as to just how much we are against this bill, but don’t do it. The last thing we need right now is a major riot of the American people because that would lend credence to what they are saying about us and we in no way wish to injure what we have achieved by some random irrational act that we will be sorry for later. There are a lot of people just like you who are fighting this and I know when you get off the phones or send that last email you are thinking what on earth can one person do? What you have to realize is that you are not just one person, you are a person in a major network of people who are calling constantly and emailing constantly and we are making progress.

The Senators that held strong the last time have said that Bush could come but not to expect much. That tells me they are just as stubborn as we are and they will not buckle under the pressure. Your phone calls and emails made this happen, you have more power than you have ever imagined, simply because you chose to act. We cannot go out and blow up anything, we cannot advocate violence because the minute we do, this fragile wall we have built against the enemy will go down as well. They will use any one action against every single one of us and that my friend will have the affect of saying this bill should pass.

I know you are angry. We all are. I know you are frustrated. We all are. But we simply must keep our heads about us and continue what we have been doing. If you want to go to a rally then go. If you want to start one then start one. But remember when you are out there on the streets you are not just representing you, you are representing everyone in America who has been working so hard in this fight and one word or action could lose this battle for every single one of us. We do not want to give them any excuse to show day and night the coverage of an American citizen who has hurt someone or been caught on camera saying something that even closely resembles racist views, patriotism is not racism but the media gets that confused and it is not just the major media it is all media.

The media is an even worse enemy in this battle than the Senators and the President. They will never cover us fairly; don’t expect them to. Even though you handle your rally with the utmost respect and care they will label you ant-immigrant and they will not include the word illegal simply because they don’t know how to spell it.

Whatever you say can and will be misquoted and used against you. Speak in short sentences because that is all they are going to print and they will find just that one sentence that they think will make you sound like a racist and they will run with it. Take it from me, I have been there. It will do you no good to say look what they are doing simply because they will spin it to look like it is good for our country.

So I urge you to think before you act or speak. I urge you to think about those who have been fighting right along beside you and remember loose lips sink ships. You may not see us there but we are with you where ever you go in the name of the American people. We are fighting right along beside you and we need you to stay calm and focus on the victory ahead. Because we will win this battle and any other they throw at us simply because right is right. So if you are planning a major uprising, a riot or anything else of that nature, your compatriots are asking you now, don’t do it.
