Bitter Vietnam Vets Often Cause Hurtful Statements Detracting From Their Honor, Duty and Service
By: Lance Winslow
Often when the discussion of the War in Iraq comes up, a bitter Vietnam Veteran will school a younger member of our society. Unfortunately, they often say ask; “Did you serve in the military?” and when the younger man states; “No” then the bitter Vietnam Veteran will make mean-spirited comments as if the younger person is scum or the lowest form of society.
Not long ago, I witnessed such a conversation take place in a Coffee Shop and understood the position and perception of the anti-war Vietnam Veteran. Still, I felt that the young man who came from a military family himself, but grew up during a long peaceful period and did not serve in the military had a good point in his comments about the importance of US presence in World Crisis Areas and against rogue nation-states. The Vietnam Veteran told him;
Oh you feel a sense of entitlement, you are better than everyone else, you do not have to serve. There is no honor in that.
Indeed, the Vietnam Veteran had completely dishonored himself in a vindictive way due to his bitter emotional displacement. At one point in the chaotic discussion and argument – the Vietnam Veteran stated that he went to Vietnam for 1541 days and he killed other humans and he liked it.
Well, that’s all well and good, it is was a war and in war humans kill other humans, however, his attitude and negative energy now, really does nothing for his fallen comrades, the US Military or any living Vietnam Veteran today. It was a pathetic and disgusting display of personal character and goes against everything this nation stands for, if someone must belittle someone else who disagrees with them; then they are not noble gentlemen at all.
In fact, one could say that they themselves are the lowest form of citizen. We must judge others by their actions and words and not let anyone off the hook for hypocrisy. If one serves in the US Military, then that does not give them the right to belittle their fellow citizen who believes in a strong National Defense. I am appalled at what I witnessed and ask that the Vietnam Vets wake-up and chill-out, do not turn the nation against you. Sincerely, Lance.
