Merry Christmas verses Happy Holidays

By: Carolyn Hileman

You will have to excuse me if I do not sound any where near politically correct here but I really have no problem with someone saying happy holidays, simply because I know they are simply saying Merry Christmas and happy New year at the same time. This works simply because a lot of people may not see you till after New years and they want wish a happy one of those to. Now I do have a real problem with holiday trees, simply because they do not sell fresh cut trees for Easter or Halloween, much less the Fourth of July although I am betting lighting one on the Fourth would be interesting to say the least.

I don’t have problem with Xmas simply because a very good friend of mine enlightened me about Christian history and what the X really means. I am not going to explain it all to you because you will understand and believe a lot better if you look it up yourself, let’s just say that before the fish symbol was the X but we really do not want the store owners to know this simply because they think they are offending us and we really would not wish to ruin their holidays now would we. But this ostracizing happy holidays is just as bad as the courts taking away the Nativity, we are attempting to deny people freedom of speech over something that in my book is very trivial.

Seasons greetings is the same as happy holidays and they both mean Merry Christmas and happy New year, some people are getting pretty darn petty about it one store even went so far last year as to put up a sign that said we are not afraid to say Merry Christmas. They made a statement alright, they said even though it has not been banned, even though there are no laws being broken by saying it and even though most people in the area were already saying it they were not afraid, give me a break. To my knowledge there have been no laws suggested that would ban saying Merry Christmas and sticking on this subject like it is impending doom is taking away from the real injustices that are being done daily in the name of fairness.

If you want to make a statement put a Nativity scene in you’re yard, to make up for all of the ones banned by the court houses. Do not go to their little Christmas light shows and don’t shop at stores that have holiday trees, but leave freedom of speech alone. Yes, I am aware that it seems that people want to wipe out every single vestige of Jesus in our land and that it is a daily struggle just to keep them from destroying religion, but the fact is sometimes we go a bit too far and this is one of those times. The simple fact of the matter is if we are focusing on the true reason for the season, we would not have the time to pick apart every single TV commercial, every web site and everybody’s words. If we were to truly focus on the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ coming to us as an infant we would not be worrying about Merry Christmas verses Happy Holidays.

In the End,
we will remember
not the words of our enemies,
but the silence of our friends.
