Obama’s “Change” for the Middle East: Blame it All on Bush

By: Craig Chamberlain

“My job is to communicate the fact that the United States has a stake in the well-being of the Muslim world, that the language we use has to be a language of respect…I’ve come to understand that regardless of your faith- and America is a country of Muslims, Jews, Christians, non believers- regardless of your faith, people all have certain common hopes and common dreams.”- President Barack Obama.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the man we’ve elected to be our President for at least the next four years. I can’t seem to find anywhere in the constitution where communicating to the Muslim world is in the Presidents job description. I seem to remember the Presidents responsibilities as being commander in chief of the military, head of the executive branch, and to defend and uphold the constitution. I don’t think being spokesman to the Muslim world is part of the job. It’s just a waste of time.

“…that the language we use has to be a language of respect…” Allow me to translate, here’s what our Dear Leader is really saying: “President Bush was mean to you, it’s all his fault, you certainly can’t expect that kind of talk from me.” The truth is that President Bush went out of his way to be nice to Muslims. Inviting Muslim leaders to the White House, insisting that Islam meant “peace”( it really means submission), and let’s not overlook the fact that he liberated 50 million Muslims from the tyranny of the Taliban and Saddam Hussein.

What’s President Obama promising the Muslim world? He’s going to listen. Yes, that’s going to put the tyrants, terrorists, and lunatics on notice. President Bush at least had a track record on this issue, the toppling of Saddam, who was seen as the strongest leader in the middle east, sent shockwaves throughout the region. It terrified Qaddafi into giving up his weapons and entering the civilized world again. Now with President Obama in power and the return of a leftist foreign policy, that sees terrorists as acting up because of poverty or some legitimate political grievance, instead of treating them like the barbarians that they are. Newsflash to the one, while your busy making the planet heal and the oceans recede maybe you can take a couple of minutes to realize that terrorists will be terrorists no matter how polite we are to them. Osama Bin Laden didn’t launch his jihad because he was broke, he’s a billionaire for cryin’ out loud. Hamas doesn’t have a political grievance, they just want to kill Jews and maybe wipe Israel off the face of the earth. So al the words the President can think of aren’t going to get them to live in peace with the Jewish state. So George Mitchell wasted all of those frequent flyer miles going over there.

I think a few points should be made here. First of all diplomacy, in and of itself, just doesn’t work. You don’t fly to Gaza city ask Hamas nicely to stop being terrorists, get their agreement and fly out. If you want their cooperation you have to slam them against the wall and put them in physical pain before they’ll even begin to talk. Secondly, the whole blame Bush thing just doesn’t fly. Truth be told he left the Middle East in much better shape than he found it. Two dictatorships gone, terrorists hunted down and killed, and democracy and liberty, beginning to take root. Would any of this have happened if Al Gore, or John Kerry had been in the White House during the last eight years.

Secondly, President Bush was far nicer to the Muslim world than they deserved. He believed that they were capable of democracy and freedom, and time will tell if he was right. And, supposedly, WE’RE the problem. We’re not the ones flying planes into buildings, cutting the heads off of people because they have a different religion. We’re not the ones trying to turn the world into a seventh century caliphate, we’re not the ones who deem every civilized thing from art to democracy to be a form of heresy.

So go ahead Mr. President, blame all of your problems on your predecessor. He mad mistakes, sure, but the middle east and our relationship with the Muslim world is not something that can be blamed on him. They hated us before they had even heard of George W. Bush, they’ll hate you Mr. President no matter how nice you are to them,no matter how much you play up the fact that there are Muslims in America(there are only two million Muslims in America, by the way) and no matter how much you try to play nice with the tyrants of the area. Their hatred has nothing to do with partisan politics and personalities, they hate us for what we believe and what we’ve accomplished, blaming everything on George W. Bush isn’t going to change that.
