The 16th Amendment and City Disobedience

In recent years, we have observed cities ignore certain laws where they have felt justified based on their political beliefs. In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom has welcomed gay marriages even when the state laws of California have prohibited them. Mayor Newsom has the support of his city in this matter, and he and the city have been undeterred in their activities in this regard.

All over the United States, we have witnessed many American cities ignore certain immigration laws by declaring their status as a sanctuary city. A sanctuary city is a term given to a city in the United States that follows certain practices that protect illegal immigrants. The term generally applies to cities that do not allow municipal funds or resources to be used to enforce federal immigration laws, usually by not allowing police or municipal employees to inquire about one’s immigration status.

These cities have adopted “sanctuary” ordinances banning city employees and police officers from asking people about their immigration status: Washington, DC, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Ana, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Detroit, Jersey City, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Baltimore, Seattle, Portland (Oregon), New Haven and Portland (Maine).

Perhaps it is time that conservatives use the same approach as it relates to income taxes. As far as I know, neither the state nor federal governments have punished these major cities for violating their laws. Why don’t we encourage small towns around the country to pass ordinances that their citizens will not be subject to federal or state income taxes? We could refer to these cities as “tax sanctuaries.” It should not preclude the city from getting federal funds where appropriate. That has not happened to New York City or San Francisco for ignoring important immigration laws.

Undoubtedly, we would have to encourage this in towns with large land mass because you could count on an immediate growth in the population of these cities. Can you think of anything that would provide a greater boom to the real estate industry in these towns? The cities and counties would benefit from a much larger tax base since property taxes and sales taxes would not be impacted – just income taxes. Liberals in these areas would be free to pay their income taxes, or move to a city which did not have tax sanctuary laws.

The attorneys and city planners in sanctuary cities could provide us the expertise on how they were able to stay out of jail and maintain all federal benefits while defying certain laws of the national and state governments.

For those who are thinking that two wrongs don’t make a right, I respond by saying, “What is wrong about blocking leftist ideologues in Washington and Sacramento from confiscating the people’s money for the sole purpose of strengthening their power over the people?” These power-hungry legislators have doled out just enough of the government largesse to buy enough votes of beneficiaries of a government takeover to establish a tyranny of the majority.

Immigrants didn’t come here from Europe, Asia and Latin America to get European Socialism, combined with Maoist Communism and the destruction of one’s opponents after politically defeating them. Yet, it is each of these things that we see in the early stages of the Obama Administration. The only thing that the $800 Billion “stimulus” package will stimulate is socialism on the way to Communism.

When has any president moved so quickly to attempt to silence by intimidation all opposing points of view. Whether it has been persistent personal attacks upon talk radio hosts or passing the most expensive single bill ever passed with utter disregard for the minority party, we have witnessed a single-mindedness of purpose like no other in our lifetimes. Up until now, we have experienced liberals and conservatives debate over issues, and we have observed far leftist politicians at a distance in places like Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela.

Make no mistake about it: this election was a transformative election. It was the “perfect storm” – an unpopular perceived center-right president, a leftist media, a charismatic socialist, and racial guilt-purging all at once. At no time during the nearly two years that Barack Obama was running for president did the media have the slightest curiosity about his extreme radical ties and leftist background.

We cannot wait 4-8 years to react. While every Democrat congressman is not a leftist, the leadership in the Democrat Party is composed of socialist/communist ideologues who demand blind allegiance to the party. This movement is heavily financed by socialist/communist billionaires like George Soros who have made their money exploiting the masses. All of the leftist education on the major university campuses has produced a cadre of leftist journalists.

For those who think this is alarmism, I refer you to Pastor Martin Niemoller’s poem “First they came…,” which discusses the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

It is worth reading:
“In Germany, they came first for the Communists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then… they came for me …
And by that time there was no one left to speak for me.”
The more modern version might be:
“In the United States, they have been coming for the Christian Right for years,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t part of the Christian Right;
And more recently they came for the CEO’s,
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a CEO;
And then they came for the talk show hosts;
And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a talk show host;
And then… they came for me …
And by that time there was no one left to speak for me.”
We fought the Revolutionary War over the concept of “taxation without representation.” Over the past several decades, we have evolved into a system of “representation without taxation.” With the relative unpopularity of the recently-passed stimulus package, perhaps now is the time for another tax revolution.

As Hillel, the renowned scholar of Judaism, said, “If not now, when?”
