Had Enough “Hope and Change”?
By: Craig Chamberlain
When President Obama won the 2008 election his supporters acted as if this were the ushering in of the millennium. No more problems now, the chosen won would heal the planet, bind up our wounds, bring peace to the entire world, and we would all live happily ever after. Too bad the reality got in the way. Things haven’t quite worked out the way as planned. There’s still war, we still have economic problems, and the American people are still divided as ever.
It’s true that President Obama remains personally popular but that can only carry him so far. Unemployment has hit 9.4% and there is no reason to think that it won’t go higher, and the Presidents economic plans aren’t doing anything to help it, in fact it’s quite the contrary. We have rising prices, our companies are going bankrupt and being nationalized, China own most of our debt, American industry has one foot in the grave and is getting to put the second one in as well, the Dollar is weak, consumer confidence and consumer spending is down. What’s the President planning? Instead of cutting back it’s full steam ahead. More deficit spending, higher taxes masked as cap and trade, and nationalization of the health care industry and turning it into a single payer government run system.
No wonder consumer confidence is down. Let’s think about this. President Obama wants the federal government to take over the health care industry, turn all doctors, nurses, and technicians into government employees, turn all hospitals and clinics into government buildings, ration out medicine and doctors visits, and is convinced that the government will somehow be and efficient, and competent, manager of health care in this country. Government is lots of things, but efficient and competent aren’t two adjectives that I would assign to it. Want to see the efficiency and competence of the federal government? Look no closer than your local post office. The government has a monopoly on delivering the mail and they’re no good at it. I was told by my post office that I was supposed to get my mail by 11:00 A.M. but I usually don’t get my mail until about 4 P.M. That’s efficiency, and since my lazy mail man is a government employee there’s no way he’s getting fired and I still have to pay his salary with my tax dollars.
Now, it’s not the end of the world that my mail is late. But health care can be a matter of life and death. Apply the post office model to our health care system and you have Obamacare. Lay aside the fact that the federal government doesn’t have the constitutional right to do this, think of all the death and misery that will be inflicted on the American people because a bunch of egomaniac progressives believe they know how to run our lives better than we do.
So we’ll all be unemployed and have terrible health care. Welcome to Obama’s America. Yes sir, hope and change all around. I’m not psychic but I don’t think the American people voted for high unemployment, record debt and deficit spending, government run health care, government run auto companies, and government run banks.
And that’s just the economy. On foreign policy President Obama hasn’t done any better. The North Koreans are testing missiles and rattling the saber, the Iranians are feverishly working on nuclear weapons, and President Obama demands Israel withdraw to its 1967 borders and give the the terrorist Palestinians their own state. Who knew that Obama had been elected head of the PLO?
He goes groveling before the Islamic world, he proclaims the Bush policies of supporting democracy in the Middle East is over. He strengthens the autocrats and Islamists in the region while undercutting the secular democrats who win elections and want to change their countries for the better. So I guess under Obama’s new policies we won’t be doing anything to help the March 14 bloc in Lebanon, the just defeated Hezbollah and their allies at the polls. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t our support of all those dictatorships that got us into trouble over there in the first place?
If this is change then count me in for supporting the status quo. President Obama will almost certainly get his way on everything he wants. After all that’s what happens when your party runs everything. And it will be a great political triumph for President Obama, but it won’t be what’s best for the country. That’s change you can believe in.
