Public Option, or Not, Obamacare Still Stinks
By: Craig Chamberlain
The soon to be ex- Senator from Nevada has managed to get moderate Democrats on board with his plans to begin the socialization of America by removing the so called “public option.” Lovers of liberty should not rejoice. Even if the Public option is taken out of the final bill, it’s still a set back for American freedom. Phase one of operation “freedom ripoff” will be complete, then it will be on to Cap and Trade, and global taxes for financial transactions, and creating a world government at the Copenhagen Summit. But let’s stay focused on health care, for now.
It’s been a dream of the left to control health care for a very long time now. The founding fathers of progressivism were advocating it from the very beginning of the movement. They understood that if a nation takes control of health care, makes it a fundamental political right, then it won’t be that difficult to take over everything else. In America they have tried the incremental approach. Rather than nationalizing health care all at once, they go piece by piece. They know Americans are individualistic, suspicious of big government, and attached to such arcane things as the constitution. So instead of taking the European model and cramming socialism down the throats of the people, they take things slow. They create medicare, they create medicaid, they didn’t try to do things all at once. Until now.
With the Congressional majorities they won in the 2006 and 2008 elections the Democrats have never been closer to achieving their dreams. They can see it now, single payer health care is just around the corner, all they have to do is write a bill full of liberal goodies, and pass it through congress and get it to the desk of President Obama who eagerly awaits the bill. Who cares what the American people think. The Democrats, as they are so found of reminding everyone, won the election. We just have to sit back and take whatever they dish out.
Fortunately the yahoo’s of America aren’t that breed of people. We have a glorious tradition in this country of telling our elected leaders what we think, whether they want to hear it or not.(and judging from Congress’s actions during the town hall meetings is very obvious that they have nothing but contempt for the people who voted them into office) This forced the Democrats to back down a bit and time was bought. But time is now running out. The Democrats are desperate. They know that they are going to get their clocks cleaned in the 2010 Congressional elections, so they have to pass a health care bill, any health care bill, before they get themselves voted out of office.
Now matter what fine tuning the Democrats have done, or how much they have tweaked the bill, it’s going to be bad legislation. It’s going to be a bad bill because it’s going in the wrong direction. It’s driving towards the cliff of socialism whether or not the words “public option” appear anywhere in the law. It doesn’t matter if you’re driving towards a cliff at a slower speed, you’re still driving towards a cliff. They only sane, rational, thing to do is put on the brakes and throw this baby in reverse. It’s never going to happen with a bunch of socialists running things, but it’s still what needs to be done.
The Democratic plan will allow for taxpayer coverage of abortion, overturning the Hyde Amendment, will cost the country trillions of dollars that it simply doesn’t have, will send people to prison for not buying health insurance, will regulate private insurers out of the market, and will create a bunch of non profits- administered by Washington- to put people under their coverage, and put people on medicare at the age of 55.
Missing from this bag of goodies is how in the world are we going to pay for all of this? Whenever a new entitlement program is created the price is always ridiculously underestimated. We already have the highest debt we’ve ever had, a three trillion dollar budget, wasted stimulus money, and these morons think that they can pass this health care bill without raising the costs. It’s all about their Hobbesian compuslion to control everything they can get their hands on. They don’t care about improving, or extending, coverage. They don’t care if the costs become too much for the country to handle, or if the quality of care falls apart. They care that they get to be in charge of it.
If the politicians in Washington wanted to do something good for health care, they would deregulate insurance, allowing people to buy insurance across state lines, allowing competition which would lower the costs of health care. The American people are stuck in between socialism, and capitalism, and it would be in our interests if we chose the latter instead of the former.
There’s still a chance of killing this monstrosity. The Senate bill has to be reconciled with the house and that will probably be a complicated process. The American people must let their Senators and Representatives know that this is not the right thing to do and anyone who supports taking freedoms from the American people will be punished in the elections. If they won’t listen to us then it will be time to get a new congress. Socialized medicine is a killer of freedom by putting so much power in the hands of the state.
This bill is bad for health care and bad for America. If our politicians won’t back us in our demands to stop spending so much money and stripping us of our freedoms, then we are under no obligation to support them. That’s a message that the American people need to send: Kill this bill, or get a real job!
