There Can be no Freedom Under Socialism
By: Craig Chamberlain
Oh, where to begin? It’s been rough for conservatives, and others who believe in limited government. The Democrats won the battle for Obamacare, and America is now a socialist nation. And, I hate to say it, it’s going to stay that way. Forget “repeal and replace”, as I’ve been saying all along that’s not going to happen. The Republicans won’t be able to override an Obama veto, and no entitlement program has ever been repealed. It took the GOP 30 years to just make modest reforms to welfare. What were going to end up with instead is “meddle with and muddle around” the GOP is already beating a retreat from repeal. Senator John Cornyn(R-TX) is leading the surrender movement(funny, I thought it would have been Olympia Snowe). Here’s what he said to the Huffington Post:
“There is non-controversial stuff here like the preexisting conditions, and those sorts of things. Now we are not interested in repealing that. And that is frankly a distraction.”
Instead Cornyn would rather focus on the provisions that cause “tax increases on middle class families” “an increase in the premium costs for people who have insurance now, and the “cuts to medicare.”
Get all of that? See this is supposedly the most conservative member of the United States Senate, and he’s not outraged that the congress has nationalized 1/6 of the United States economy. He’s not outraged that the bill is unconstitutional Prima Facie. No, according to this, his outrage is that Medicare- another unsustainable entitlement program- is being threatened. That’s what the GOP is going to sell the American people. They’re going to offer a few worthless reforms along the edges of the bill when they should run it through an industrial sized shredder and erase every last vestige of everything President Obama has done.
Now, to be fair, Senator Cornyn says that the Huffington Post misrepresented his comments. And since it is the Huffington Post it’s highly probable that the Marxist goons who run it are lying through their teeth. Senator Cornyn said in response:
“Some media outlets have misrepresented my position on repealing and replacing the Presidents $2.6 trillion health care bill. Make no mistake about it: I fully support repealing this Washington takeover of health care and replacing it with a bipartisan bill that lowers the cost of health care.”
It’s up to the American people to decide which statement they decide is accurate. But one thing that people who want Obamacare gone must do, no matter what, is that any candidate who fails to act on repeal must be voted out. If the GOP wins in 2010, as is likely, and they give up on erasing Obamacare, then it will come time for the conservative movement to give up on them and form a new party founded on explicitly conservative lines.
Why does any of this matter? After all it’s just one bill, it’s likely to benefit us at the polls, and maybe we’ll all learn to love socialism in the end(that’s what the Democrats are banking on). The problem is that this isn’t just one bill, but the opening salvo of many bills, all of which are designed to give the government more control and bring even more socialism to America. Coming to a Congress near you is cap and trade, amnesty for illegal immigrants, cuts to our military, and on and on.
There can be no freedom under socialism because if the states has the right to control your economic actions then they will declare that they have the right to control your political and social actions as well. Just look to our northern neighbor. Canada is supposedly a free country, but since becoming a socialist nation the idea of freedom of speech has vanished. Say something politically incorrect and you’ll be dragged before a human rights commission. Ask Mark Steyn. Ann Coulter had to cancel a speech in Canada not because of anything she said but because of something she might say. They have preemptive prosecution for people they want to silence, and this goes on in Canada.
If we can end up with socialized medicine there’s no reason that the United States isn’t in danger in going down the road all they way. Now that the left realizes that they can use reconciliation, or just “deem” something passed they will run over the American people to advance their socialistic agenda. If they can force you to buy health care why can’t they pass the “fairness doctrine”(an Orwellian term if there ever was one), why can’t they overturn all of the popular referendums outlawing gay marriage, or take tax exempt status away from churches, or require licensing for guns?
America was founded to be a free republic, with a limited federal government, strong checks and balances, and most of the authority and sovereignty belonging to the people and the states. That system, that ideal, no longer exists. The erosion of our freedoms began almost a century ago with Wilson and progressivism, it accelerated under FDR and his New Deal, it exploded under LBJ and the Great Society, and now we’ve driven off the cliff with President Obama and his Marxist agenda.
The truth is we have no one to blame but ourselves for this catastrophe. The GOP never, not once, attempted to undo anything that Wilson, Roosevelt, or Johnson imposed on the country. They should have. In the 1920′s the GOP could have repealed Wilson’s amendments to the constitution. Instead they accepted a progressive income tax, and only changed the rate of taxation when they could have abolished it completely. They made no attempt to repeal, or even reform, the New Deal, and were still under the lash of the Great Society. God only knows what Obamacare, and the rest of his agenda will do to this country.
All of these were socialist movements, let’s make no mistake about that. They consolidated power in the hands of the state, and took it away from the people. Everyone of these movements made us less free. They took away the ability, and right, to control our own lives, and increasingly put us under the regulation of Washington. We’re now controlled to such a ridiculous degree that our founding fathers are spinning in their graves. King George never sought this kind of power, and we got rid of him anyway. Our own government, which is supposed to be by the people, for the people, and of the people, does this and instead of taking up arms we roll over and die, and threaten to vote them out in November. Yeah, that’s got the Democrats worried. They’ve changed the country, they’ve made it theirs, so even if we vote them out it’s still their country. The Republicans won’t be in charge of a center right republic anymore, but a far left social democracy. Look at Greece, look at France, our future now lies there.
The American people are now, more than ever, faced with a stark choice. Freedom or socialism. The two are not compatible, and any attempt to marry the two will fail miserably. The American people need to ask themselves a question when things take a hard turn for the worse, and they will. How far are we willing to go to get our freedoms back? How far are we willing to go to make this country a republic again?
