Living in Wonderland
By: Patti Bankson
If Alice were to fall through a hole into today’s world, I think she’d feel right at home. It would look pretty much like her Wonderland… Mad Hatters, Cheshire Cats, and Queens and Kings yelling, “Off with their heads!†Well, maybe not literally, but close enough. Everything’s being turned upside down and backward at some level of government somewhere, somehow… it’s just nuts! You’d think that after a number of weeks and years of writing about that kind of thing, I’d run out of examples. But, no, they just keep on coming… and the result seems to be increasingly less freedom for citizens, and more control, and money, being handed over to, or snatched away by, government.
Example: A Southern California city ordered a couple who were holding a Bible study in their home to get a permit, or shut down. This is the 2nd time this has happened in that city. Now… if there were a real reason why these people shouldn’t be having these meetings, besides $$, that is, they wouldn’t offer the permit option, would they? How does paying for a permit change the parking or nuisance factor? It doesn’t, which apparently didn’t matter, after all… the city decided they didn’t need a permit and they didn’t need to shut down, either. Just another attempt to control, and collect money. Happily for all freedom-seekers, religious and otherwise, it was a failed attempt.
Another example: The New York Legislature has introduced a bill that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking. The bill, A.10129, states (in part): “No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises.†The restaurants would be fined $1000 for each violation. This is Assemblyman Felix Ortiz’s (D-Brooklyn) attempt to decide for New Yorkers what they can eat… restaurants today, their homes tomorrow? And, the only thing that’ll get healthier because of this bill? The state’s coffers. Restaurants and fast food places will end up very ill, or dead. In the meantime, eating out in NY will be like having dinner with your grandparents, in their nursing home. Yummmmmm!
While local governments are trying their best to take over our lives, our federal government is, of course, steaming full speed ahead… in addition to health care, they’re also going to be the only game in town for student loans, which raises the question… what ever happened to “working your way through collegeâ€? Maybe if that idea caught hold again, there wouldn’t be girls dancing naked before throngs of drunk and drooling boys, kids falling off balconies, or in ERs with alcohol/drug related ailments. And before you tsk-tsk over my calling them girls, boys and kids? Until they grow up and start behaving responsibly, that’s what they are.
Speaking of growing up and behaving responsibly, wouldn’t it be nice if more of our politicians could set a better example by doing the same??
