President Obama’s Dereliction of Duty
By: Craig Chamberlain
President Obama, despite what the lapdogs in the media will tell you, has failed in his primary responsibility as President of the United States. He has been in office for less than 15 months, and in that time he has produced nothing to help the country. Forget health care, forget cap and trade, forget the fairness doctrine or card check. His main responsibility as President of the United States is to be commander in chief of America’s military. His top job, is to keep the United States safe.
In that effort, one cannot honestly say that he has improved on the policies of his predecessor, or that America is safer today than it was when he took the oath of office. Violence is beginning to pick up in Iraq, and President Obama ignores it, and runs away from the success that the surge brought in that country. While he might have sent 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan he only did so after months of indecision, and with an ironclad time line as a condition to their deployment.
We can’t expect our soldiers to fight wars with overbearing rules of engagement, or advertising to our enemies when we are going to leave the country. In our offensive in Marja, Afghanistan, our troops were told they could not engage Taliban forces unless the Taliban were actively firing on them. Why not have our troops fight blindfolded and with one arm tied behind their backs while we’re at it? We’re advertising when we’re going to launch an offensive on the city of Kandahar, not that it will give the Taliban a chance at victory, but why let them know anything at all?
He bullies, and alienates, our allies to the point where one can legitimately question whether Britain, Israel, India or Australia, are actually still allies. And I thought that President Obama was supposed to be the one who would improve our standing in the world and make our allies like us again. The “cowboy” Bush had more of a diplomatic touch than the suave, sophisticated, law professor we’re stuck with now.
Our enemies, on the other hand, get the royal treatment. Iran, Venezuela, Russia, and North Korea are all scrupulously attended to, and no action taken that might be interpreted on their part as an aggressive move. We gave Georgia to Russia, so that they could dissect it at their pleasure, we sold out our allies in eastern Europe(another group that President Obama’s foreign policy has given the finger to) and left them at the mercy of the Russians, because we didn’t want to risk offending that nation of drunken cossacks by building a missile shield in that region.
President Obama refuses to impose an embargo of gasoline imports to Iran, the one sanction that might actually do some damage to the regime. He refuses to support the dissidents, and ordinary citizens who are fighting for freedom and democracy. Instead he contemptuously thinks of them as criminals and insists that the fascist collection of Mullahs running the country is really a legitimate government.
North Korea threaten us, and South Korea with a nuclear strike, and how does President Obama respond? By unilaterally(and I thought Democrats were supposed to be the party of multilateralism) declaring that the United States would not respond with nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
Everyone concedes that nuclear weapons are dangerous, and no one wants to see them used. But to declare them off limits only encourages violence. To the leftist mind the problem of nuclear proliferation is solved by disarmament, by the United States standing up and declaring, alone, that we will get rid of our warheads. That leaves nuclear weapons only in the hands of dictators, rouge states, and one day, probably terrorist groups as well. Leaving men like Kim Jon Il, and Mahmoud Ahmdinejad, with impunity to attack without fear of retaliation isn’t going to make anyone safer. Iran isn’t pursuing nuclear weapons because they’re afraid we’re about to launch an attack, they are pursuing them to use them as blackmail. The world isn’t safer if only the villians have the weapons to fight.
President Obama has abandoned the only realistic sensible ways to protect against nuclear weapons. The missile shield has been abandoned, and now even the threat of mutually assured destruction has been revoked. What, then, should make the tyrants and terrorists of the world afraid of the United States?
President Obama is dangerously naive, but he is most naive, and unobservant, in his prime responsibility to defend this country, and that will put American lives in danger.
