When, indeed?!

Criminals can always find a way around the law, taxpayers can always find a loophole, and politicians can always find a way around a term limit. Term Limits? What term limits? Politicians hit the term limit wall, and just run for a different office… and, too often, win. Like Sen. Bill McCollum (Fl-D)… except for just 3 years, he has held one political office or another since 1972! That’s 35 years!! Obviously, we also need to limit the total number of political jobs one can hold.

Unfortunately, term limits, as useless as they may be, don’t exist in way too many other places. US Term Limits (USTL) has been, and still is, the leader of the movement to change that. According to their website (www.termlimits.org) term limits have been placed on 15 state legislatures, 8 of the 10 largest cities have adopted term limits for their city councils and/or mayor, and 37 states place term limits on their constitutional officers. Again, from their website: “American politicians, special interests and lobbyists continue to combat term limits, as they know term limits force out career politicians who are more concerned with their own gain than the interests of the American people. USTL stands up against this practice. We are the voice of the American citizen. We want a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, not a tyrannical ruling class who care more about deals to benefit themselves, than their constituents.” AMEN!

I believe, and I hear from so many others, that these professional politicians are an endangered species… and it’s about time. I’m stunned at the mind-boggling clueless-ness of the men and women who preen before cameras while bragging about the 20, 25, 30 and more years they’ve been in congress. Since our current problems didn’t just pop up yesterday, have been building up over decades, don’t they realize that they’re saying that in spite of those 20, 25, 30+ years they’ve had to work on these problems, find solutions, head off the difficult times we’re living in right now, they didn’t get ‘er done. Why not? They’ve had all that time and have done nothing but waste and spend, hide behind smoke and mirrors and words they think will pacify us and win our votes… again. Shame on them! And shame on us for keeping them in office. We need representatives who realize that they’re in office to give of themselves, and to serve the people; not to lie, cheat, steal and pad their own pockets to assure themselves a prosperous future while destroying ours… representatives who realize that ethics matter; that character is what you do when nobody’s watching.

Robert Coles said, “Abraham Lincoln did not go to Gettysburg having commissioned a poll to find out what would sell in Gettysburg. There were no people with percentages for him, cautioning him about this group or that group or what they found in exit polls a year earlier. When will we have the courage of Lincoln?”

When, indeed?!
