Educating Illegal Border Jumpers
By: Michael John McCrae
The Associated Press article was: “Teachers in middle of debate over immigrant kids†dated 6 July 2011. Which begins: “When an award-winning journalist recently revealed he’s an illegal immigrant, two of the key players in his tale turned out to be educators who helped keep his secret. It’s the kind of story teachers and principals scattered across the country know well.â€
There is a dirty little secret here involving American public schools. Teachers do not turn in illegal border jumpers who end up in their classrooms. Annual costs nationwide for public school education have been steadily climbing. Although most of that money is laundered through unions and returned to Democrats as campaign contributions, the few dollars that do make it to classrooms across the country are being used to educate illegal border jumpers for free.
There is a need for union teachers to keep classroom census high to justify the call for more and more dollars every year. Allowing illegal children to attend classes without reporting these children to authorities is a breadwinning opportunity for educators. This is part of a pact the Obama Administration has with the unions under the guise of helping children. From the report: “Law officers and lawmakers in some states want schools to help spot illegal immigrants. Federal authorities remind school officials that every child is entitled to an education. National education groups echo that but recommend that schools avoid getting involved when it comes to students’ citizenship issues.â€
So under the blanket “every child is entitled to an education†every illegal child gets a free ride. Now I don’t disagree that every child should be educated, but these illegal children are being paid for by taxpayer dollars from American citizens who will receive absolutely no direct benefit or return for those dollars. The beneficiaries are illegal children, unions and eventually the Democrat Party that receives tens of millions of dollars in campaign contributions.
From the report: “Michael Simpson, a National Education Association attorney, said the teacher’s union doesn’t view the issue as something it needs to educate teachers about. The group issued a legal guide…with the National School Boards Association related to teaching “undocumented children”… The guide is mostly limited to explaining the Supreme Court’s* ruling that such students have a right to a public education. It advised schools not to ask about students’ immigration status because it might discourage enrollment.â€
*From “denverpost.com†March 2011: “The Plyler [Supreme Court referenced] ruling applies only to elementary education, not to secondary and post-secondary education. It does not hold that public education is a right. Nor does it confer legal status on illegal immigrant children or prevent them from being arrested and deported. Finally, it does not prevent a school from inquiring as to the legal status of students enrolled in school.â€
Of course the NEA with the help of the Obama Justice Department has re-written “Plyler†to mean what they want it to mean to get a larger illegal bang for the taxpayer dollar. With over 20 million illegal border jumpers running American streets (article cites only 11 million) one would be hard-pressed to argue America is not losing billions of dollars giving free education to these illegal foreigners. That teachers are complicit in covering up for foreign nationals is to the detriment of actual American citizens.
If you are not going to report and deport these freeloaders then the nation should still try to identify the national origin of each child in an American school. Then, upon their graduation send the bill to their country of origin with a demand letter for full payment to the United States Treasury accompanied by a “Thank You†note thanking the taxpayers of the United States for their hospitality. The children can remain in INS detention until their education bill is paid and upon final payment each child will be eligible for a free ticket back to their home nation. That would be a win-win!
Finally from the report comes this: “Alabama’s Legislature recently passed a law requiring schools to report the immigration status of students… the U.S. Education Department and Justice Department issued a joint letter to school districts…reminding them they are required to provide all children equal access to public education. Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently said the department is closely monitoring policies in Alabama and elsewhere. “What we don’t want to do is have a chilling effect. … To have more students leave school or more students drop out … would not be good for children, communities or the country…â€
…Or the unions or Obama’s chance for reelection by alienating the Hispanic Democrat voting bloc that is still expecting a blanket amnesty before Obama is voted out of office in 2012. Is America a great country for illegal border jumpers or what?
