Freedom of Religion Threatened
By: Craig Chamberlain
It was no accident that our founding fathers put freedom of religion first when they were compiling our Bill of Rights. Such a freedom was considered essential to a truly free society, and such freedom is rare in the world even today. Freedom of religion(or more specifically, the freedom to be Christian) is threatened all over the world. Muslim nations and communist nations brutally repress religious minorities. Even in Europe the rights of Christians(the few that remain) are silenced by the soft totalitarianism of political correctness. We can’t be offending Muslims and atheists now, can we? And that’s what this is about. The totalitarians find Christianity antithetical to their ideology, and are offended by it. Well, I’m offended that they’re offended.
America is not immune to the totalitarian impulse. The left has never liked religion. They fervently believe in Marx’s declaration that “religion is the opiate of the masses.” They have been working for the last 50 years at scrubbing Christianity from the public square. And for the most part they’ve gotten their way. School prayer has been banned. Students may make no reference to their Christian faith at graduations. Nativities are banned from public spaces. The ten commandments are erased, considered to be a subversive teaching, while atheist screeds announcing their faith are considered sacrosanct free speech. Just wait until Christmas. Christmas hymns, nativities, and even saying “merry Christmas” will be banned. Atheist billboards pronouncing that it’s all a lie will litter America like discarded beer cans.
Two more recent examples of the governing elites atheism, and their desire to erase Christianity from public are found in the battle over Chick-fil-A, and a case in the town of Stuebenville OH. The lefts doctrine states that you can be a Christian in your church and in your home, and one wonders how long our godless masters will grant us this privilege? But the minute you step out into public one must be as secular as they are. You can be as devout as Billy Graham in your home, but you have to think like Richard Dawkins in the voting booth.
We all know the story of Chick-fil-A. The President of the company exercised his freedom of speech and said that according to his religious beliefs he can’t support gay marriage. He might as well have announced that his sandwiches were really made of ground up puppies, or that he thought that the holocaust didn’t really happen.(though the latter belief won’t get you in too much trouble with the leftist/ Islamic alliance these days) Rahm Emmanuel, rather than fixing the cesspool that is Chicago, he declared Jihad on a business that isn’t anywhere near Chicago. Tolerance, it seems, is a one way street. They receive but they never give. Heartrendingly people showed up in droves to support Chick-fil-A, most though only said that they supported their right to free speech, which is good, but it would have been nice to have seen more people say that they side with them in the gay marriage debate. Perhaps some privately do, but were afraid to say so publicly. If so then how healthy is free speech in America? This will not be the end of the story. The left doesn’t forgive or forget and they’ll keep coming after Chick-fil-A with lawsuits, protests, and terrorist violence until the company capitulates and announces that it loves big brother.
The second incident is in Steubenville OH, a small town of about 20,000 along the banks of the Ohio River. The city seal is a depiction of the city, and in the background is a small cross. This represents the city’s heritage but mostly represents Franciscan University of Steubenville. Well this tiny representation of history was beyond the pale for the new totalitarians. The Freedom from Religion Foundation, committed to the Stalinization of America. Erasing the past for a new future! How petty, thin skinned, and spiteful does someone have to be to care that there is a cross on a town seal? This people really need to get a hobby other than destroying our constitutional freedoms.
I know that Christ taught to turn the other cheek, but enough already. At some point we as Christians, as Americans, have to stop being lambs, and start being lions. The constitution applies to everyone, Christians included, and it’s time that the leftist filth that seeks our enslavement be reminded that we have rights and we will defend those rights. The right to be a Christian doesn’t stop at the door of your church. Meekness is a Christian virtue, but the atheist hordes are this bold because for so long we’ve let them get away with it. The next time a judge bangs his gavel and deprives a Christian of his God given liberties, we should take it as an attack on all Christians. The next time they say a cross has to go, Christians should say make us. You want it gone, then come and take it down yourselves. It’s time Christians grew a backbone in defense of their faith, the enemies of Christ only have power over Christians when we give it to them.
Christians need to remember the declaration of St. Paul “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” (Romans 1:16). If we are not ashamed of something, then we must defend it, fight for it, and disobey the new Caesars when they try to take away our constitutional liberties. When we cease to be a nation of believers we will cease to be a free nation. Christians, Jews, Hindus, or anyone concerned about our freedoms should be wary of the atheists and their allies. A freedom, once lost, is not going to be reclaimed.
