Today’s Paul Reveres

By: Patti Bankson
So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm…
To every Middlesex village and farm,
A cry of defiance and not of fear, A voice in the darkness,
a knock at the door, And a word that shall echo forevermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear,
The hurrying hoof-beat of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.
That is the last verse of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s, “Paul Revere’s Ride”. It took place in 1875, a critical time in our country’s history. We’ve experienced many critical times in our country… each one different, perhaps, but each just as important as the previous.
Now, in 2013, we are, once again, at a critical point in America. As in the past, we didn’t just wake up one morning in the middle of a desperate crisis. Everything has a beginning, and what we’re experiencing now, certainly had one. I’m not sure when that was, but I do know that there has been the sound of hoof-beats echoing across the country for some time, and, be still my heart, finally… the people are awakening.
Revere’s cry may have been, “The British are coming”, but the cry today is, “The Tellers of Truth” are here! And, perhaps history will use the words, “And not a moment too soon! when recording the events of our time.
The people stepping out of the shadows of deceit hovering over our government are being called, “Whistle Blowers”… but I won’t call them that; it’s too negative. These are heroes, Tellers of Truth, who bring with them a a ray of light… the hope that our country can be great again… that integrity still exists, even if in only the few who are stepping up to set the record straight. Oh, there are those who will continue to see them in a negative light, but I’d like to think those who do are few and far between. I’m choosing to place some faith back in “We, the people”… to believe that when given The Truth, we can make better decisions… we can hold ourselves, and our leaders, to a higher standard… we can begin to remind ourselves that, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. For too long, we citizens have been the weakest link in the building blocks of our country, our cities, our communities… helping to produce not only a sloppy, opportunistic leadership, but one totally lacking in character and morals. We need to remember what makes a leader worthy of being The President of the United States. It’s not being a graduate of a certain school, being hip and oh, so cool… it’s not external, in fact. At a minimum, it’s honesty, integrity, wisdom, and selflessness, with at least a touch of class.
 We haven’t seen much of that in D.C., but, maybe “Today’s Paul Reveres”, willing to sacrifice their lives and careers for Truth, will finally be able to expose those who create dangerous and damaging fiction by dancing around, and twisting, the Facts. The buck must stop somewhere and sometime. Why not here and now?
