Catch Those Goal Posts! By Jeff Jackson (01/31/05)

Books of Interest

To listen to John Kerry answer Tim Russert on Meet the Press this weekend you might think that Iraq was falling apart before our eyes.  Perhaps he is still smarting over his 2004 election loss.  Perhaps he is planning another run in 2008.  Perhaps he just does not know how to see the good in what has happened.

John Kerry, Senator from Massachusetts, talked about how the real test was not that elections in Iraq went off without the streets running red with blood or that turnout was huge in the face of terrorist threats but rather how the real test was what happens in the future.  Did you catch him moving the goal posts back another ten yards?  Even when they reluctantly admit that good things happen, the left wing has to qualify it with pessimism.  I guess that since Kerry didn’t win “hope” is no longer “on the way” for the Democratic Party.

When we even hinted at striking the Taliban in Afghanistan the left cried out about how the mighty Soviet war machine was unable to fight a war there.  When we toppled the Taliban they decried the terrorist insurgency that rose up.  When the terrorist insurgency began to die they questioned the competence of our soldiers because bin Laden was still at large.  When free elections in Afghanistan were held they questioned the legitimacy.  When the legitimacy issue failed to gain hold they bemoaned how opium had become the cash crop of many Afghani farmers.  When the new government began to crack down on opium production they complained that the sky was blue and not red.

Ok, so not even the left wing is insane enough to complain about the color of the sky but I think you get the point.

Then Iraq came along.  In the run up to the war to oust Saddam for violating UN sanctions and also terrorizing his people the left said that the mighty Iraqi army would slaughter our young men and women by the thousands.  When the army began to crumble they moaned about how the Republican Guard would be our downfall.  When the Republican Guard was routed they complained that the people would not welcome us as liberators but as oppressors.  When the people appreciated our presence and the liberation we brought to them they cried that Saddam Hussein and his sons Dope-ay and Goof-ay had not been captured.  When Dope-ay and Goof-ay were killed in a shoot out they bemoaned their deaths as barbaric and continued to complain that Saddam was not found and that WMDs were not found.  When it was pointed out that WMDs were only a small part of the reason to go to war the left ignored it and complained louder.  When Saddam was captured they complained that he was treated badly.

Then there were the complaints about not enough troops and then right before the election people like Teddy Kennedy were saying that we had to withdraw some of our troops.  Even though just before there weren’t enough and now there are apparently too many.  Then election day came and while there were a few terrorist attacks the streets did not run red with blood and Iraqis turned out by the millions to make their voice heard.

And on it will continue to go.

EVERY time progress was made towards something good and the liberation of millions including women that had been denied a political voice, John Kerry and the left wingers move the goal posts back another ten yards.  They try to paint a gloomier picture even as the clouds of uncertainty are been lifted slowly and surely.  It seems that all they know is how not to trust in the ability of free people to do the right things and the desire of people to actually be free.

They realize that their only recourse is to grab the goal as we approach and run as far away as they can and say “See! You haven’t won yet!”  This is the attitude of a defeatist that knows they cannot win and that has staked their entire political future on bad things happening.  We don’t need defeatists and people with “can’t do” attitudes running this country.  Thank God we don’t have them for the most part.  But if you look back to how hard the left tried during the 2004 Presidential Election and how close they came and how many supported the “can’t do” rather than the “can do” it should make you stop and think.

We still have a long way to go in our own country to being a “can do” society again like we were when our founders set pen to paper and declared our independence.  And despite having to go a long way towards recognizing and appreciating liberty ourselves, we still were able to liberate two countries in four years from dictatorial rule and set up fledgling democracies.

Pretty darn good for a country made up of almost 50% “can’t do” people running the other way with goal posts in hand.
