Complacent Americans Strike Again by Jeff Jackson (3/14/04)

Recent polls have shown that Americans believe that the greatest problems we face and issues they care about the most are jobs and the economy. Terrorism comes in somewhere around 6% in terms of what Americans believe is our most compelling issue to be faced. Complacent Americans strike once again.

It’s sad that only 6% of our fellow citizens understand the gravity of terrorism perpetrated radical islamist terrorists as still one of the most grave threats we face today . The rest continue to plod along with the same tunnel vision they exhibited during the 1990s when me-centeredness came to a head and have resorted to the same general apathy that lead to 2 towers falling, a hole in the Pentagon and a graveyard in Pennsylvania. 94% of Americans are more concerned with their own personal existence.

Generally speaking that is not bad. America’s greatness is based upon individualism. American’s continued success requires its people to care about their individualism.

The problems that we have here though is that our continued greatness and basic ability to concern ourselves with our own individual freedoms and our own sometimes selfish desires requires protecting America. Failing to protect America against foreign threats such as radical religious terrorists has a direct impact on our ability to be Americans and continue on with the American philosophy of individualism.

Yes, jobs and the economy are important. However in a country with unemployment around 5.6% which is lower than the average of the last 30 years and economic growth that is currently better than most quarters in the last 20, one has to wonder why the American public is so focused on willing down a good economy. They are more focused on this than the security of the nation that provides the highest average standard of living of all countries on this planet and has the richest poor in the world.

Americans, only two and a half years after the events of September 11th, 2001, have forgotten the terrible effects on our economy and jobs that terrorism has. They forget how after 2 towers fells, the Pentagon was ripped open, and a graveyard created in a field our economy struggled, jobs were lost and retirement accounts tied up in the stock market plummeted. With short attention spans they forget how terrorism destroys those items that they are focused upon as being more important.

Americans continue to be more focused on their own needs than their primary task, which is to maintain this Republic for the future and their posterity. Americans continue to be more intensified on gathering more for themselves than they are in understanding that it is the very essence of America and the unalienable rights of all men that it was formed to protect that needs defending now more than ever.

Two and a half years later the tunnel vision and me-centeredness has returned with a vengeance. But 190 plus people dying on subway trains in Spain because of backpack bombs reminds us that terror is real and it is a threat to the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of all mankind. Because without life one cannot receive their God given right to liberty and cannot pursue happiness.

And if you think that the events of September 11th cannot happen again, look at those smoldering trains in Spain and know that evil never sleeps and never vanishes from this Earth. It may lay dormant biding its time to strike, but it never ever ceases to exist.
