Extra Curricular Wha-a-a-t!?

In recent years some young female teachers have given new meaning to “Extra Curricular Activities” by having sexual relationships with their 12, 13, 14 year old male students. I’m sure you’ve seen and heard the stories. Do you understand this? Or are you as baffled by it as I am?

Before I was even 15, I already found boys my age to be beyond “immature”. Of course, at that age you believe that you’re completely grown up and too sophisticated for anything that even hints of childishness. At that point you’re just waiting for those tangible things to arrive that would be proof-positive of your (as-yet-unrecognized) adulthood – like your permanent driver’s license, a car to go with it, and pipedream of pipedreams, your own place to live. (Subsidized by good ‘ol mom and dad, of course! After all, we aren’t wanting the responsibilities of adulthood, just the perks!)

How would you explain the behavior of these women? Simple Arrested Development? Or is it some kind of mental illness? If you listen to defense attorneys discussing the subject, it’s definitely mental illness and they think these women should plead “Temporary Insanity”. Attorneys don’t go for the arrested development theory because there’s no “good plea” there. In other words, no reason good enough to help the offenders avoid the punishment they so richly deserve! There are people in prison today who have committed worse crimes who tried - and failed - to use mental illness, so I’m thinking it probably won’t work in these cases.

I asked some people what they thought was going on in these women’s heads, if anything. Here is a composite of the answers I got: 1) Control 2) Something lacking in adult relationships 3) The “rush” of a wrong, illegal, questionable and/or secret activity 4) Adoration / Admiration 5) Innocence revisited 6) Low self-esteem.

I think I’d add a few other things that no one else mentioned. Women’s Lib – equal opportunity and equal pay somehow produced the idea that women should also have equal opportunity to indulge in bad behavior! Have casual and/or inappropriate sex (like these teachers did), drink hard, cuss like sailors, etc. Some things aren’t attractive or expedient no matter who is doing them, but - call me old-fashioned and sexist - they’re even less so when women are doing them. Certainly, we can also thank Hollywood and Madison Avenue for helping to make those behaviors seem acceptable and “normal”.

How about kids without adult supervision? One of those teachers and her student had had sex at his house. Wouldn’t have happened at my house when I was in school. My mother was always there when I came home, and our household was the neighborhood norm, not the exception.
