I’m A Loser.  How About You? By Jeff Jackson (10/11/04)

Books of Interest

At 9pm on a Friday night I was sitting in my living room with a Rolling Rock watching a Presidential debate.  That’s right I have no life.  I can admit it.  I am a loser.  On a Friday night I sat in front of my television set watching two men argue about the best path for America despite my own personal belief that neither one has the “best” path for America, but that one is certainly far better than the other.  If you don’t know which man that is, browse this site some more.

Anyway, the thought crossed my mind about just how big of a loser I was about twenty minutes in when my Australian Shepherd sat there, looking at me with a look just begging that I give him some attention.  But I kept my attention on the television.  Yup.  I am a loser I thought.  Mind you that I am not one of these highly paid talking heads that had to watch the debate as part of my job.  I did it simply because I am a big loser.

I sat there for the whole debate, watching and waiting and taking in what was being said and occasionally commenting on my blog.  At times I was yelling at the television hoping that President George Bush would hear my cheers and maybe even take some of the advice I was throwing his way when Senator Kerry said something stupid or outright lied.  I also called out Senator Kerry from the beginning when he claimed that President Bush has lost jobs despite the numbers from the Department of Labor Statistics and even louder when he claimed he had never wavered in his position on Iraq.  I knew he couldn’t hear me, but like I would do again on Sunday as the Steelers throttled the Browns, I tossed out curses and challenges which went unanswered.

And as the debate wore on and the thought about just how big of a loser I was for sitting there yelling at politicians on the television screen was becoming more and more seared into my mind something changed.  What changed was my opinion that being a “loser” was a bad thing.  Rather, I continued to admit that I was indeed a “loser” but realized that if caring about my country enough to be passionate and educate myself on the issues and understand the threats this country faces was what made me that then I was actually proud to be a “loser”.

That’s right.  I am proud to be a loser.  Because this loser cares about his country, the good old U. S. of A., enough to sit at home when others are bar hopping and dancing at clubs and then blindly going to the polls on election day oblivious to any of the actual truths that exist around us.  You know those people whom I talk about.  They are those young people in college and freshly graduated who went out Friday night an hit the bars hard while thinking that it is President George W. Bush who has a secret plan for reinstitution of the military draft instead of the socialists in the Democratic Party who actually proposed and ultimately voted against their own plan when it was put to a vote.  They are those who take the words of Jesse Jackson as gospel and believe that somewhere, sometime, there is a secret plot by “conservatives” to promote supreme court justices that would seek to overturn civil rights.  They are those that did not actually read the Duelfer Report about how Saddam coerced and bribed our supposed “allies” into stonewalling any action against him until he could get the United Nations to lift sanction and then reconstitute his weapons programs.

They are the “hip” folks that went out and did their own thing on Friday, having their minds already made up.  And they left us “losers” to watch television.  It reminded me of a time not to far long gone when people who would have been considered “losers” in their own day put their would be country and their fellow colonists above personal pleasure and comfort.  It reminded me that many people in the colonies were oblivious to a “revolution” and “politics” and a battle for “liberty“.  And because of that the fledgling nation being formed nearly faltered and fell until the militia of made up of more men that would be called “losers” because of a love for country and liberty joined the fray.

I realized that us “losers” or “geeks” as some others may call us were the reason this nation was formed and has survived all these years.  And I realized that it was those that in their own time could not be bothered to be educated or that did not crave liberty were the reason that nearly caused this nation to never exist at all just as those that cannot bother to be educated or that do not crave liberty today are causing us problems.

And as  I sat there, gritting my teeth, cursing President Bush every time he promised more unconstitutional programs like a good politician but cursing Senator Kerry’s lies and socialist agenda even more I drew solace from the fact that it was the losers and geeks that made this country work and that what this country needs is more losers and geeks who actually give a darn about what is going on around them and are willing to look at the facts and educate themselves.

And I am proud to say that I am a loser.  Are you a loser to?  Or are you part of the problem because you are to “hip” to pay attention to politics?
