They Just Don’t Get It! By Patti Bankson (11/13/04)

Before the election we had wall-to-wall pundits predicting the outcome.  Now that the election is over we have wall-to-wall pundits analyzing the outcome. The Democrats have a kind of dazed look on their faces, as if someone sneaked up on them and hit them up side the head with a big stick labeled “Moral Values”.  They keep saying that Democrats are just like Republicans - they have moral values and are people of faith. Their reason for their failure to garner votes isn’t because they’re clueless, no! It was simply a communication failure.

Actually, I think the liberals have been doing a very good job of communicating their moral values and their faith for a very long time – many years, in fact.  Their problem is that they think we aren’t paying attention until they start campaigning, and that the only information to which we pay attention is the information they choose to release during their campaigns. Wrong!

These are the people who chose Bill Clinton as their presidential candidate in spite of some character issues, such as his apparent evasion of the draft during the Viet Nam War, his glib response when questioned about past marijuana use, allegations of womanizing and shady business deals.  When he became the only president ever impeached on grounds of personal malfeasance, the first president sued for sexual harassment, the first president accused of rape, these are the people who defended him, even called him an “honest man”.  Are those the moral values they’re talking about?

These are the people who then chose John Kerry as their next presidential candidate in spite of some character issues, such as the accuracy of his version of his Viet Nam service, the truthfulness of his testimony about wartime atrocities, his lack of core beliefs, as evidenced by his inability to stick with one position on any given issue. And then, of course, there is his “ala carte faith” - that’s where, in spite of the tenets of the faith, he gets to pick and choose those he likes and to which he chooses to adhere. This is the kind of faith that one can shrug off like a coat, hang at the office door, and no one would be the wiser. Is this their idea of what it means to be “people of faith”?

These are the people to whom winning and control are so important that they have compared their loss of the election to thousands of people being assassinated on American soil, by fanatic terrorists. I’m not kidding – they say that the re-election of President Bush is worse than 9-11.

Wow! They really just don’t get it!
