In the May 19th 2003 issue of TIME Magazine, Joe Kline looks at the issue facing Democrats in the upcoming presidential election. His article entitle "How to Build a Better DEMOCRAT" while a nice read, tap dances around the real issues facing the party of JFK and really misses the point.

It's an advice article. He gives his advice on what Dems need to do to beat President Bush. But none of his advice will help them win for each of his three main points; recapture the flag, loose the frown, and kill the consultants while nice talking points, completely misses the key problems facing the Democratic Party.

Time's cover asks "Why they don't make democrats like they used to (and how to fix it)". But the answer is much simpler than the pages of political advice thrown out to the Democratic Party. The shot answer is that the Democratic Party is not the same party as that of JFK and other historic liberals.

The somewhat longer answer is that the main part of the Democratic Party is not capable of doing these three things suggested by Mr. Kline. It is not capable because day after day we watch the leadership and many of the elected officials of this party talk out of both sides of their mouth and change their stories in mid stride without even admitting that they have changed their minds. And then they change them back again.

While both parties pander to special interests, the Democratic Party has show to me at least that they not only pander but promote these special interests above the overall party and they allow these minorities to define the direction that they take. And when the positions of two or more of these groups clash we see them scamper and clamor not to mend fences but to widen the rift.

They can't loose the frown. The gloomy perspective many of the party have is inherent in them. One does not become this pessimistic over night nor without seriously believing it. It is who they are. The general path they have us on is one where we must be beholden to government because we are not capable of improving our selves. They have little faith in people beside themselves.

They can't recapture the flag. Many of them do not believe what that flag stands for. If they tried, they would be doing it falsely. Some think that because they have military records that that automatically entitles them to be exempt from showing what is true patriotism and respect for the banner. We continually see how the Democratic Party and their appointees fight against many of the freedoms they fought for under the flag..

No, the main Democrats can not do what Mr. Kline suggests. They must be who they are. And if they win, they will do so because of being themselves.

And who are they? They are the party of the far left special interests; a loosely knit group of political foes to the "vast right-wing conspiracy" with few if any political ties to each other. They have allowed the far left; the wacko environmentalist movement, the Marxists, the radical feminists, the people that believe blacks are inferior and need their help to succeed, and the anti religious to name a few, to over take their agenda. And that is why most of them can not take the advice of you and TIME.

The only way for Democrats to even return to the party of Kennedy is if and when the majority base of hard working members stand up and make it happen. It certainly will not happen as long as the elitists run the party.
