References to the right to a right not be taxated without representation can be found in:
  1. Declaration of Independence “For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent”
  2. Virginia Declaration of Rights, Section VI, “That elections of members to serve as representatives of the people in assembly ought to be free; and that all men, having sufficient evidence of permanent common interest with, and attachment to, the community have the right of suffrage and cannot be taxed or deprived of their property for public uses without their own consent or that of their representatives so elected”
  3. DECLARATION OF COLONIAL RIGHTS:
    RESOLUTIONS OF THE FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, October 14, 1776 "Resolved, 4. That the foundation of English liberty, and of all free government, is a right in the people to participate in their legislative council: and as the English colonists are not represented, and from their local and other circumstances, cannot properly be represented in the British Parliament, they are entitled to a free and exclusive power of legislation in their several provincial legislatures, where their
    right of representation can alone be preserved, in all cases of taxation and internal polity, subject only to the negative of their sovereign"
  4. Fairfax County Resolves July 18, 1774 "6. Resolved that Taxation and Representation are in their Nature inseperable; that the Right of withholding, or of giving and granting their own Money is the only effectual Security to a free People, against the Incroachments of Despotism and Tyranny; and that whenever they yield the One, they must quickly fall a Prey to the other."
  5. Virginia Resolves on the Stamp Act, Patrick Henry May 30, 1765 "Resolved, That any person who shall by speaking or writing maintain that any person or persons other than the general assembly of this colony have any right or power to impose or lay any taxation whatsoever on the people here shall be deemed an enemy to this his majesty's colony." *Note that while this resolve was proposed, it was not passed
  6. A PLAN FOR COLONIAL UNION, by Benjamin Franklin Letter I "I apprehend that excluding the people of the colonies from all share in the choice of the grand council will give extreme dissatisfaction, as well as the taxing them by act of Parliament, where they have no representative"
  7. A PLAN FOR COLONIAL UNION, by Benjamin Franklin Letter II "That it is supposed an undoubted right of Englishmen not to be taxed but by their own consent, given through their representatives."
  8. English Bill of Rights "That levying Money for or to the Use of the Crown, by Pretence of Prerogative, without Grant of Parliament, for longer Time, or in other Manner than the same is or shall be granted, is illegal."
