Sports...baseball

The Pittsburgh Pirates are quite possibly one of the hottest teams in the NL Since a HORRENDOUS first 25 days of June where they managed a paltry 4 wins against 19 losses in that stretch, they have been on a mission. Over the 16 games before the All Star Break they ripped out 12-4 mark and as of July 24th were 7-2 since the break. All in all that is a 19-6 streak that doesn't show much signs of ending because of timely hitting and good pitching (something the Pirates have never been able to have both of at the same time over the last decade).

Now however it appears as though they are going to trade Kris Benson in order to dump salary. He is in the final year of his contract and has come on strong over his last 8 or so starts. Problem is he has also been an anchor for a pitching staff that is eating up opposing hitting.

Get rid of Benson and then what? Vogelsong and his 6.69 ERA into the staring lineup?

While the Pirates may feel the need to dump salary in order to make budget this year does it serve not in their best interest to not try and hold on to him? If he is not traded before the deadline and he walks at the end of the year you get nothing. But if you sign him now you keep this team going strong for the rest of the year and see if they can keep it up in 2005. If only Kendall didn't have that huge salary weighing the team town...

...now back to your regularly scheduled dose of politics
