Translated correctly, bin Laden's speech suggests some knowledge of the U.S. electoral college system. In fact, notes MEMRI, in one section of his speech where he harshly criticizes President Bush, bin Laden states: "Any U.S. state that does not toy with our security automatically guarantees its own security."
MERMI is the Middle East Media Research Institute and this issue arose after American media supposedly mistranslated the word "ay wilaya" as country (or the whole U.S.). In reality, however the word means "state" as in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Delaware, etc. The alternate translation puts a slightly different spin on the meaning of what Usama bin Laden meant in his latest threats to the United States. I specifically paints the threat as directed towards any state belonging to the U.S. that votes for President Bush.
Will this effect the way Americans vote on November 2? Do Americans believe that if their state (such as New York) votes for Kerry that they will be spared future 9/11 style attacks? Will Americans rally at being threatened by a thug hiding in the mountains?
These are the questions that will only be answered after the votes are counted November 2. But I will say that any American that believes for one second that they will be spared the wrath of a mad man is probably too stupid to vote.
