An enemy is any person, organization or sovereign nation that would confront the United States with the purpose of doing us or our citizens harm be it physical, economical or other either directly or through proxy. An enemy is also any person, organization or nation that supports or comforts those that are previously defined. An enemy is not anyone that disagrees with our form of government or our policies, just to be clear. Disagreements are allowed. The attempted destruction or subversion of our sovereignty is not.

To stand against our enemies we must be first and foremost be willing to recognize them as such. Failure to do so will be our ultimate downfall. And once we recognize those that are a threat to the United States we must be willing to act against them in the appropriate and decisful manner.

Some enemies can be dealt with through the hand of diplomacy. But in such cases we must be wary to not compromise our founding principles for the sake of negotiation. Still others can only be dealt with through the bringing to bear of economic pressure. Others can be dealt with through international sanctions. Some can be defeated through the show of superior military force. And ultimately those that remain can only be defeated through the use of superior military force.

And we must never be hesitant to use the appropriate response. Fighting a diplomatic battle with an enemy that has proven dishonest will not work, nor will it work against an enemy that has already made clear it's intentions to attack us and our allies again and again. The fault of many comes when they fail to recognize the proper response to a solution. Or rather when they refuse to use a response that they know to be appropriate because they are too blinded by ambition or false ideals.

We live in a day when a small device can maim and even kill thousands. It is an enormous threat to our way of life. Few sane people desire war and conflict. But all sane people recognize it as a necessity at times. Aristotle knew this when he said "We make war that we may live in peace." So too did St. Augustine when he spoke "Peace is not sought in order to provoke war, but war is waged in order to attain peace." And those words are as true now as they were in their own times.

Reasoning with diplomacy to those with the ultimate goal of physically harming us does not work. It does not work for such people are irrational in the strongest sense in that they have already determined that the only way to deal with the United States is through causing us harm and attacking us. We must use threats military force to hopefully cause internal pressure to force the change of our enemies and if that should not work, yes we must be ready to use force.

War is a last resort. But it must always be a resort. To not be willing to use it as a method to attain peace and stand against our enemies places us in the position of already knowing that we will be conquered by those that will use war and violence as a method to an end. It places us in a position of weakness where enemies of this nation and her ideals want us. Some of these enemies are external to our borders and others are already internal to our workings and live among us. It is sad to think that some of our fellow countrymen are in fact enemies to our country, however a study of history shows that such elements always exist within one's own borders.

A neighbor that dislikes you because of a tree in your yard that drops acorns into his is able to be appeased by preventing the situation such as trimming back the branches or agreeing to clean up the mess the tree makes for him. True he may find a new annoyance to complain about afterwards however to not attempt to resolve the situation peaceably is a bit extreme. However the neighbor that decides he will break into your home and beat you to death must be met with a stronger force than appeasement.

Internal enemies are often the hardest to spot and root out. There is a not so fine line at times between practicing the freedoms of all free men that we are guaranteed and actively working to subvert our nation. We must never rise to the point where any action taken that we do not agree with is seen as a sign of enemies. For we can not and continue to be a nation of founded on liberty. We tread lightly on the subject of treason. But we must recognize that it does indeed occur and such acts must be swiftly dealt a death blow through the use of our courts. Too, false accusations of treason must also be quickly and resoundingly defeated.

Our external enemies are much easier to spot. Those external to our borders that seek to do us harm are often much more vocal and visible for they operate outside the watchful eyes of vigilant patriots. They are no less dangerous to be sure than the traitors that would arise. And we must never shy away from making our desire to destroy their will and their plans knowledge for all to see. We should not ignore even the slightest threat no mater how insignificant it may seem. Often the larger picture of the disaster awaiting us should we fail to act is only seen though the piecing together of the compilation of many small, and seemingly minor signs of trouble.

We have learned that lesson all too well over the years of our history.

Also we should never use war as a one size fits all approach to our problems. If a country can be defeated without the firing of a single official shot like was done with the Soviet Union in the 1980s then we must be able to do that. Wise men must use their wisdom to choose our actions against each threat. But each threat must be ultimately dealt with. Often there are many solutions that will solve the threats of enemies. Different men will choose the path that best suits their ideals. And be wary that some ideals will not allow them to react in the proper way when necessary. Again, we must also be able to change our approach when the current one is seen to be inadequate.

The road to war is not often reached by simply waking one morning and deciding upon it. The road to war is a tragic path often littered with missed signs and failed attempts at peace. War does not just become from a sane man with any other option. Nor does it come from a mere desire for war. War becomes from a failure to resolve a conflict in any other way. It comes from facing enemies that will not stop until we subvert to them or are dead.

A diplomat will argue at infinitum for peace even as the enemy's tanks roll over his countrymen. A pacifist will not lift a finger to stop those that would subvert them. A leader and the free men that follow him will fight when needed and mourn their dead as they fall but they will not stop until the enemy is defeated. But too a leader will know when war is not the answer to be taken and when other steps shall be applied in its stead.

Our enemies are real. And they will trample us if we allow them. And they will always find ways to make inroads against our liberty and our rights as free men. Vigilance and a desire to stand against these threats is the only way to ultimately ensure our safety, our children, and our future.
