An Open Letter to France by Jeff Jackson (3/12/03)

To France:

There have been times that we, as nations, have stood side by side and arm in arm against common foes.  There have been times we, as nations, have helped each other through.  However those times are but a distant memory.  And many of us have not lived through them so we have not the pride of such things to lessen this pain.  It is clear that our solidarity in each other's concerns is no more at the current moment.  But it has not become so without effort to maintain such unity.

We have tried.  You have resisted.

It is clear that the ideologies of our nations no longer unite us.  And while our governments may make amends in the name of diplomacy we suggest you expect no such thing from the people of our nation.  For we are not bound by international diplomacy.  We are bound by our feelings and our beliefs.  We are bound by the undying aching in the pit of our stomachs that France no longer stands to proclaim the greater good and liberty that is the inherent right of all mankind.  No, we are now left with the vision of France as the great obstructer to liberty.

The government of France and the people that support it are nothing more in our eyes than perpetrators of the status quo even if that status quo is a brutal dictatorial regime that threatens those who love liberty.  And as such we can no longer in good conscious stand by the side of France for while the French flag may share the same colors as that of Old Glory, it is clear that now that is all that we share.

No, our people will not forget this.  And should we fail to remind them then we ourselves are culpable in empowering the same dictators that France does this day.  For we have a long memory and that memory knows of a France that has shunned the liberty of all free men.

You can not win back our hearts with words.  You can not regain our admiration with token actions.  You can not hope to reopen closed and locked doors with less fervent disdain.  No, this rift that you have brought between us can only be bridged with the toil and sweat of a generation or two of honesty and the utmost dedication to the liberty of men.  And even should you do it, know that it is only a bridge to span the chasm created for this wound will not heal as quickly.

And when our children ask "What of France daddy?" we will tell them the tale of Chirac and Hussein and the drums of war that France may not have beaten but none the less enabled.  And should we find that France has enabled this foul man in violation of the treaties that ended the first Gulf War then we will tell them of that too.  But the horror of France enabling the suffering of millions will surely be enough to teach them a valuable lesson about the country who's flag flies blue, white and red.

And if you think we are being harsh then we weep for you.  For it is not us that are being harsh.  Rather it is you.  Never have we asked for France to be a puppet and blindly follow.  Nor have we asked such in the name of the fallen men of our country who lay buried in the sands of Normandy; buried there so that France might be free.

No, we have not asked these things.  Nor do we expect France to believe that they should be indebted to the U.S. for such acts.  For we did it because it was right to do.  And knowing that it was truly right is all that we need.

What we would have expected was France to understand the cost of liberty more than they apparently do.  We weep for the ideals of France and for the people that shall suffer as an effect of their actions.
