Freeing a man who desires the comfort of slavery over the right to go as he pleases serves no purpose. It serves no purpose for a man that does not crave liberty would not know what to do with his freedom nor how to defend it. Liberty must be desired in order to prosper in the hearts of those that obtain it.

A man who desires not the liberty of his own personal freedom can not be expected to cultivate that which is granted to him nor can he be expected to understand how his liberty can not be allowed to interfere with that of another. And often, the desire for liberty will come only once the frustration of enslavement has festered to the point where the resentment of enslavement can not be contained. Only once the oppressed and enslaved desire the gift of liberty are they ready to take the first step towards it.

Some in the United States believe that it is our duty to liberate those that are oppressed and enslaved around the world. And while I say that such action is a noble goal, we must tread cautiously towards such goals. We as a nation should never turn a blind eye to those that would seek to eat of the fruits of liberty but I would also say that it is the responsibility of those that are oppressed and enslaved to take the first steps and show that they desire such things. And once these steps are taken, we should not be ashamed to aide them.

Unwilling disciples of liberty and her blessings are not what we should be seeking. For when someone is unwilling, they often resist and then grow resentful of those that would force upon them such things as they do not desire. For enforcing liberty upon those that know and crave only oppression is to enslave them. We take them against their will and that is something that will fester into a hatred of freedom.

Many would rush to liberate those that they feel are oppressed. And many would see oppression as a reason for the dispersment of aide to those that are living in oppressive societies. We must not only realize that should we not jump to liberate those that are not ready to liberate themselves, but too we must also refrain from the desire to bolster oppressive societies through the use of aid.

Such aide serves only to muddy the waters of the oppressed state. Providing aid to failed economic and societal models hides the true desolation that some of these systems evoke upon their people. The aid we provide is integrated into the society and makes the failed system appear to be working better than it really is. If we provide $10 billion in aide to an oppressive society who's economy is only $10 billion in and of itself essentially doubles the productivity and the wealth of this nation. Thus the oppressive government appears twice as good as it really is, and in many instances that is enough to make those under it desire nothing new.

Doing this pushes back the desire for freedom and liberty as we bolster the failing system. And in so doing so we reinforce that oppressive governmental systems work better than they normally would and deprive such peoples of the desire for liberty. We are doing them a disservice, usually all in the name of compassion.

We, as the wealthiest nation on this planet need to maintain that our wealth is our wealth. For spreading it around as described above leads others to not understand when they are in the jaws of oppression and also leads to others to despise us as the only nation capable of bailing out failed plans and ideals.

Only when those from around the world marvel at us from afar without our interference in their societies will they truly appreciate the differences between the way they live and the way we live. When we provide aid and support to failed nations these people, however, see that they can exploit our wealth and freedom without generating either themselves.

I do not speak of an isolationist philosophy when I say these things. I do not advocate that that we should withdraw from the world stage. Only that we should be more thoughtful about how we participate in world affairs. And this thoughtfulness will bolster our standing with those that draw the air of freedom into their lungs and also with those that seek to be free themselves.
